“Faithful Waiting”

Lori Roe

2 Timothy 2:14-15

14 Continue teaching these things, warning people in God’s presence not to argue about words. It does not help anyone, and it ruins those who listen. 15 Make every effort to give yourself to God as the kind of person he will approve. Be a worker who is not ashamed and who uses the true teaching in the right way.”

In these verses, Timothy is urged to remind followers of Christ to be faithful to the truth of God’s Word. It has been given to us as a gift so that we may know God and our place in His kingdom. Throughout the generations, there have been those who create controversies from differing opinions over wording. This wrangling of words is of no benefit, it mishandles God’s sacred word and leads listeners to confusion and distraction. We are to run from this kind of dispute.

As we celebrate this Advent season, we also wait with hope for the second coming of Jesus. In this time of waiting, we are to do our best to conduct our lives as faithful disciples of Jesus Christ.

Prayer: Gracious Lord, thank you for your Word that brings us the truth about our life in your Kingdom. Help us to handle the Word carefully and to have no part of useless and damaging controversies. As we wait for Jesus’ return, bring power to our efforts to honor you with our lives. Amen.
