“Fruit of the Spirit”
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other.” Gal 5:22-26
These character traits that are found in the nature of Christ are produced by the Spirit. If these fruits of the Spirit are to grow in us, we must know Christ, love Him, remember Him, and imitate Him.
The Spirit within us will help us fulfill the greatest of God’s Law as Jesus taught when He was questioned by a Pharisee. Jesus replied: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself. All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two Commandments.” Matt. 22:37-40.
In order to accept Jesus Christ as our Savior we need to turn from our sins. As Christians, we still have the capacity to sin even though we have been set free from it. We no longer need to give in to it. We can draw on the Spirit’s power daily to overcome them. We only need to seek God’s approval. If we do this, we will not need to seek approval from others. Let us love our neighbors and share the good news of Christ Jesus.
Prayer: God, help us to use the fruit of the Spirit to follow the greatest of your commandments during this holiday season and always. Amen.
