“If you love me, SHOW it!!”
Gone are the days of animal sacrifice – where, once a year, the requirement was, to offer a lamb or goat, etc., to atone for sin. God has provided that sacrifice, once and for all, in the gift of his own son, Jesus. In response to His gift of mercy, God asks that we become a living sacrifice, showing our love and devotion to Him by the choices we make in our lives every day.
In Isaiah, God says, “What are they to me? I have enough of burnt offerings and no pleasure in the blood of bulls and goats! Stop doing wrong, learn to do right, seek justice! Encourage the oppressed, defend the cause of the fatherless, plead the case of the widow!”
In earthly terms, would you rather have someone lovingly helping with everyday chores and life, or receive a nice gift once a year and a grump the rest of the time? I know what I would choose!
We are encouraged not to conform to the world but be transformed by the renewing of our minds. Sometimes, I think, in our laziness, we would like to just toss a goat on the altar, call it a day, and get on with our own agenda. Yet, as God’s ways are higher than ours, His ways provide for a better life for us personally, and in the community.
Finally, in Galatians 5:6, we find, “The only thing that counts, is faith expressing itself through love.”
Prayer: Holy Father of us all, we are so grateful for your loving sacrifice and grace. Help us to gladly live each day offering to you our lives and hearts in loving response! In Jesus’ name, Amen.
