“The Gift That Keeps on Giving”
We are entering the season of gifts; making our lists, asking what shall we give this person or that, remembering a gift from seasons past.
As we consider the original Christmas gift of the Christ Child: God comes down to save us, continually present with us, lead and comfort us, and finally usher us into His eternal presence. What might we offer in response to that unparalleled gift of Grace and Love? Anything comparable? Hardly!!
Any material gift we might offer, while it might be helpful initially, and given with proper motive, can only go the way of all material things, which is to be used up, age, and fall apart. God’s gift of Love and Grace to us in the gift of Jesus is the only gift that will never be lost, broken, or lose its power.
What gift does God ask of us? To love Him with our whole heart and soul, mind, and strength and to love our neighbors as ourselves, to offer our lives in exchange for Christ’s, in steady faith, to trust and follow His example in serving others. What a light burden that places on us as we go through this life! When we honor this plan for our lives, it is, again, a gift in itself, creating for us a life that unfolds, with ever-increasing knowledge of His presence, direction, peace, and comfort. A gift that truly keeps on giving, when, finally, as life on this earth ends, to hear “Well done, good and faithful servant! … Come and share your Master’s happiness!”
Prayer: Father, open all hearts to your glorious gift! May we honor you with the gift of our whole hearts. Amen.
