“God’s Covenants”

Steven Shealey

Genesis 9:12-13

Throughout the Bible, beginning with the story of Adam and Eve, we read of God making covenants with man. In Genesis 9:12-13, the great flood had receded, and God made a covenant, God placed His “bow” in the sky. The rainbow we see after a storm is our reminder of this covenant from God.

Over 2,100 years ago, God promised an even more powerful sign of His covenant with us – His Son Jesus Christ. God sent His Son to die on the cross for our sins and to rise again on the third day to show us the way to everlasting life. God has promised that whoever accepts Jesus as their Savior will receive everlasting life. While we don’t need a visual sign of this covenant, God’s Word of promise can never be broken, we can use the rainbows we see after a storm to remind us of God’s gift of His son and Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross for our sins.

As we enter the season of Advent and the celebration of the birth of Jesus our Savior, let us recognize again that God has offered us this covenant and that the promise of eternal life depends only on our acceptance of His Son as our Lord and Savior.

Prayer: Thank you, Lord, for the gift of your Son and the promise of eternal life that he represents. We are truly blessed by this sacrifice. Help us to trust in your Word and remember all the promises that you have made to us. Amen.
