“A Great Light”

Carol Sue Hutchinson

Isaiah 9:1-7

This scripture passage is one of the prophecies that point us to the birth of Jesus. When Christ comes, He will be like a great light that will fill the corners of darkness, there will be great rejoicing. The scripture before this passage tells of wars and darkness with much evil in the world. Then Isaiah starts with “Nevertheless,” and puts all that darkness behind us. In the darkest area, there can be hope when Jesus comes.

One name is not enough to identify this Child of hope. “And He will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” He has five names that show the power and authority that He will bring to the earth. Isaiah was living in a time of great darkness and God revealed to him what was coming in the future that would bring light to the darkness.

We live in a world that seems to have a lot of darkness in it. As Christ’s followers, we have the same hope that Isaiah was given. We have the hope that with Christ by our side we can weather the storm. Nowhere in scripture does it tell us that the darkness and storms will be taken from our lives, we do have the hope that Christ walks with us through the storms. We have hope that a great light will come and bring light to the dark corners.

Prayer: God of Light, help us to see the hope that light can bring into our world. You are always with us, and we can be a people of light and hope in our world. Thank you for the Child of Hope and Light. Amen.
