“What is Your Favorite Fruit?”

Sharon Bates

Philippians 1:9-11

We are so fortunate to live in an area where many different fruits abound. What is your favorite one? Our grandchildren love strawberries. We, also love going blueberry picking with them every spring. Our avocado tree has supplied us and many of our friends with delicious avocados. It was always special to take oranges and grapefruit to our relatives at Christmas. We even play an alphabet game trying to name the various varieties of fruits. Since the beginning of creation fruits have been used as major symbolisms, as well as supplying nutrition and substance for our lives (in addition to being the source of original sin). The word “fruit” appears in the Bible over 35 times.

The apostle Paul tells us in Galatians that the fruits of the spirit are love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Now in Philippians, he throws in the fruit of righteousness. Now I was doing pretty good with the Galatians’ tree, but how do we receive and pursue the righteousness one? In Paul’s closing letter to the people of Philippi, whom he loves dearly, he prays that their love abounds more in knowledge and depth in order to help them discern what is best for them to live a life that is pure and blameless, in other words, what is morally and ethically right. This fruit of righteousness only comes through knowing Christ Jesus. Let us resolve to learn more about Christ’s love and will for us and seek a life of righteousness.

Prayer: Gracious God, creator of both earthly and spiritual fruits, help us to love more deeply and pursue spiritual knowledge to discern what is best for Your Kingdom. Amen.
