Matthew 1:20-24

Have you ever had a dream that came true? Or, in particular, did an Angel of God come to you in your dream and give you a message? Did you feel it was a message from God? Did you act upon it? Did it change your life? Or did you upon wakening just wonder “what a crazy dream” and go about your daily life unchanged?

Have you ever been in a situation where an unplanned pregnancy came into your life? What was your reaction? Did you accept what happened or reject the circumstance?

What would have happened if Joseph had responded in this way? What if Joseph rejected Mary and accused her of being unfaithful? What if Joseph ignored the Angel’s prophecy and abandoned Mary? Where would we be today?

Matthew 1:20-24 is a crucial point in the Bible. Do not underestimate the strength of this passage. Joseph was responsive to the Angel foretelling of the child his beloved Mary carried. He was told not to be ashamed of his wife. He was told his wife had not been unfaithful. He was told to love his wife. He was told to name the child Jesus. But the biggest point: he was told his wife was carrying the Son of God who would save the world from sin.

Prayer: Thank you, Lord, for instilling righteousness in Joseph. Thank you for sending the Angel to give Joseph the wonderfully prophetic news. And thank you for opening Joseph’s mind and heart to trust the words to be the truth. Please open our minds and hearts so we may hear your guidance and follow it, even when it is difficult. We pray for your forgiveness when we do not listen. Amen.
