Chain-o-Lakes Carvers will begin their 14th year on Thursday, September 9 at 6:30 pm in Stradley Hall. The group was started as an interest group by the church in 2008 and is looking to expand its community of woodcarvers. Anyone with an interest is invited to come to see what it entails regardless of his or her wood experience.
Carved by Robert Hornback, this mouse is carved in situ, it is not a separate piece glued on, but is all carved in ONE piece. It is a wonderfully patterned cherry wood 9 1/2" x 2 1/8".
Nothing is required but an interest to start. There is always someone who will loan a carving knife and safety glove. Carvers begin on a simple learning project, usually an owl, and are guided through this first project. The encouragement and artistry of each other's projects bring faithful carvers back each week to grow and absorb.
For the last few years, most of the carvers have entered the carving competition at the Florida State Fair in Tampa and have won quite a few ribbons. Remember, in two more days you could be sharing and seeing this group's knowledge and talent. If you are a newcomer to this craft form or an experienced carver, join them to help inspire your creative spirit.
