“Breath of God”
By Pastor Rob Harding
Passage: Ezekiel 37:11-14
I will put my Spirit in you and you will live…
In the beginning, God breathed life not just into all that is. He breathed life into us. As He put his spirit in us – His breath in us – we were given the chance to live.
In our Ezekiel passage today, we see that the people of God find that spirit draining from them. Their “hope is gone.” They feel cut off from God and from the life they once knew. Truth be told, we all know that feeling quite well. At one time or another, we’ve been there, longing for life at its best with God but wondering how to get back to that place.
In those moments, one of the best simple prayers we can pray is this: “Breathe on me, breath of God…”Only that – God’s breath, God’s spirit – can lead us to the place of life worth living.
In 1978, Edwin Hatch set such words to music. Verse one reads:
Breathe on me, Breath of God,
Fill me with life anew, That I may love what Thou dost love,
And do what Thou wouldst do.
May we remember in the midst of this Holy Season that only God’s spirit can bring us to life. More importantly, may we remember always that true life is that which aligns completely with God’s will for us: to do His work, to love what He loves. Is your hope waning? Do you feel distant from God? Then cry out: “Breathe on me, breath of God…”
Prayer: Loving God, when we feel cut off from You and the life You want for us, lead us to seek out the spirit you have placed within us. There we will find hope, a hope that will never fail us. Amen.
