“Cost of Discipleship”
By Carol Sue Hutchinson
Passage: Luke 14:22-34
The requirements to become a follower of Jesus are very simple. It really isn’t difficult to remember. When we accept the gift of salvation, we give all we have and are to work for God’s Kingdom.
The phrase “you must hate your father, mother, brothers and sisters” simply means that nothing is worth more than your relationship with Jesus. Your family is important and deserves our care and love but not before our love and care for God.
Salt has two properties: it is a preservative and it flavors. As Christ’s followers we live without excuses, we become a preserving element; those who stand for justice and righteousness despite the world’s corruption. When we live according to that way Jesus guides us, we flavor life everywhere – at the office, at home or in the church.
Jesus wants us to surrender all to him – our words, our relationships, our attitudes, and our thought process. This way He is reflected in everything we do and say.
We have choices. Our first choice is to accept God’s gift of salvation. Then we choose each day how we will follow Him in our lives
Think of the rich and full life Jesus offers us. We are loved, comforted, protected and never alone. Scripture tells us that He will never leave or forsake us.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, we surrender all to you and choose to follow you in all of life. Amen
