You are Blessed. You are a Blessing.
Most of us are familiar with Matthew’s version of this scripture passage. “The Sermon on the Mount.” Also known as the beatitudes. Luke’s much shorter version is considered The Sermon on the Plain. In this passage, Jesus is giving his disciples a glimpse into the kingdom of God – an upside-down world by their understanding. Depending upon your lot in life, you either loved what He was saying or hated it!
I grew up in a poor(ish) family. I say this because I never really knew we were poor. I had food to eat, clothes to wear, and lots of loving friends and family around. That being said, I also remember the day I found out I “was poor.” A boy in my class, whose father was a doctor and lived in one of the largest homes in town told me I was because my dad was only a carpenter. From that point on, I struggled with the shame of not having material riches. Then one day, as I was complaining to my mom about all the things I did not have, she opened my eyes to the things I did have. Some were material, but mostly, she had me focus on my friends and my kind heart. “That is what makes you rich,” she said. My mom, a woman of deep faith told me God would provide everything we needed if not here on earth, then in heaven.
Prayer: Gracious Lord, you gave us (me) the tools for happiness. Help me to recognize that you have blessed me abundantly so that I could be a blessing for others. Amen.
