That’s Not Fair!

Laura Rector

Matthew 20:1-16

There are 7 deadly sins, and one of them is envy. Envy, or jealousy, is harmless in some ways, like when I envy my siblings who have the means to travel all they want. I envy them, but at the same time, I am happy that they get to do so.

Envy turns harmful when resentment sets in, as in this scripture passage. The workers who toiled all day resented the good fortune of those who got paid the same for a shorter workday. They were angry about this! But why? The owner of the vineyard chose to dole out the earnings equally, which was his right, despite how fair or unfair the workers thought it was. He chose to love all the workers the same, no matter what they did that day.

This is exactly how God loves. No matter how fair or unfair we believe it is, God loves all equally. The person who chooses to live a life that is pleasing to God or pleasing to Satan, yup, loved the same! It doesn’t seem fair, does it? But God is love, so it could be no other way. Without God’s example of unconditional love, where would we be? Well, for me, life would feel hopeless. Just knowing that God’s love can never be earned by what I do or don’t do brings me peace, joy, and hope. How about you?

So, instead of screaming that’s not fair when someone you deem unworthy, is blessed in some way…maybe just pray that they recognize God’s hand in it and be happy for them.

Prayer: Gracious Lord, you have not called me to “like” everyone, only to “love” them. Help me to truly understand how to do this. Amen.
