The Unexpected Cost

Daniel Copeland

Luke 14:22-34

Have you ever gone to the hospital? When you are there, doctors, nurses, and specialists come to see you. When you get home, the bill comes. I should say “bills.” There are a lot of costs associated with your care. The hospital, the radiologist, the lab technicians---all of them demand payment for your health. Let’s face it. You are willing to pay the cost, considering your life may have been dependent on their care of you.

In this passage, verses 22-24 are the tail end of a parable. The guests who had been invited did not show. The king demands his servants round up guests from other sources. This was a warning to the Jews, who chose not to hear His message. Just because they were Jews didn’t mean they were in God’s Kingdom.

The rest of this passage is difficult. It is spoken to the Jews that were following Him. Some of the specific points are as follows:

1. 25-27: Following Jesus will require you to give up on your own hopes and dreams, as well as those of your family.

2. 28-30: You need to plan sacrifice. There will be times you need to let go of things that don’t line up with God’s plan for you.

3. 31-34: You will have conflict. This will be from within you and conflict from those who have their own expectations of you.

Is all this suffering and hardship worth it? Remember the hospital. You may not have been happy when the bills came, but you were glad the doctors, nurses, and specialists were there to save your life.

Prayer: Lord, help us to remember Jesus came to give us life, but it doesn’t come cheaply. Amen.
