You give them something to eat
Jesus gave his disciples the power and authority to drive out demons and to cure diseases then he sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal the sick. He told them to travel light, stay in one home only in each place where they stopped, and leave any place where they weren’t welcomed, shaking the dust of the town from their feet thereby showing that they were not responsible for the way the people reacted to their message. Thus, they went, proclaiming the kingdom of God, healing people everywhere because Jesus knew that he had to both preach and heal while he presented his kingdom so that the listeners would recognize that this realm was both spiritual and physical.
The apostles returned, reporting to Jesus what they had done for this was a short mission. Then they all withdrew to be by themselves to a town called Bethsaida, but the crowds followed them. Jesus welcomed the people, spoke of God’s kingdom, healing those who needed healing. When evening fell, the disciples were concerned about people being hungry and urged Jesus to send them to find food; however, Jesus told them to feed the crowd.
So, it is for us: when we carefully present Christ as the Savior and find that our listeners are rejecting the whole idea then we need to move on to others whom God wants to reach. We must also remember that it is important to minister to the whole person, literally and figuratively providing for the physical needs where needed and providing the message of God’s great love for each and every one.
Prayer: Dear God, Help us to love and care for your people the way Jesus did. Amen.
