Without A Doubt
Carol Sue Hutchinson
John the Baptist had been the one “to prepare the way” for Jesus’ ministry. Until this experience, he only knew what God had told him – “He was to prepare the way for one that came before him.” He and Jesus were cousins. Yet all he knew was his purpose – his mission.
John is introduced by Mark like this: “And so John came, baptizing in the desert region and preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. The whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem went out to him. Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan River…. After me will come one more powerful than I, the thongs of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie. I baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”
John knew who he was and what his mission was. Then Jesus came to be baptized and John knew his mission was ended – Jesus would baptize with the Holy Spirit.
The thing about this passage that really catches my attention is that John knew who Jesus was and testified to this with great conviction. John testified, “I saw the Spirit come down from heaven as a dove and remain on him. I would not have known him, except that the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, ‘The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is he who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’”
John knew without a doubt who Jesus was and testified to all who would listen. Do you know Jesus without any doubt not only who Jesus is but what He has called you to do?
Prayer: Holy God, help each of us to know what you are calling us to do and be so convinced that we are able to tell everyone who needs to hear. Amen.
