Since 2009 the Sewing for a Purpose ministry team has partnered with the Orlando Chapter of Ryan's Case for Smiles which provides whimsical pillowcases to help relieve stress and give an emotional boost to children during their hospital experiences, especially with cancer. Over 362 hospitals participate in the project and hospitals that are served by this chapter are Advent Health for Children, Nemours, and Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children. Nationally over 75,000 children have received a pillowcase each year. Since September of last year, the group has sent over 446 pillowcases to the hospitals.
On September 18th in recognition of September as National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, pillowcases made by the Sewing for a Purpose group are being displayed at the Lakeview service and in the Sanctuary.
Interested in joining this ministry? They meet on the second Tuesday of each month at 1 pm in Stradley Hall. People are needed to iron cuffs, cut material, sew or serge and the fabric is provided. Also, plenty of precut fabric and instructions will be available for pickup and return, to sew at your leisure. Know that your giving makes this ministry possible!
