“What Are You Doing For Others?”
Matthew 19:16-31
Melinda Mailly

This story of the rich man asking Jesus what he must do to inherit eternal life reminds us that we can keep the commandments, but still be lacking if our focus is on ourselves and our stuff, rather than outward on others and serving in faith, by Jesus’ example.

Having just recently celebrated MLK Jr Day, it brings to mind a valuable tagline heralding service: “What Are You Doing for Others?” I don’t think Jesus expects us to sell every possession and give it all away. We know that the gift of eternal life is a gift of grace, given freely, not because of our works. I do think Jesus is saying that we need to be focused not on ourselves and material possessions, but on others and putting their needs before our own.

Prayer: Lord, help us to follow your example and build our lives around serving others. Thank you for the blessings we enjoy; help us to use them to bless those around us. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
